Chapter 7Segment Is Not Channel

How the guest books, why the guest came, and what Rooms Revenue means

By · eHMS Press

Monday morning, five bookings land on Lina's pickup report: a brand-app booking, a flash-sale OTA booking, a negotiated corporate rate, a qualified discount, and a tour-package room.

Anika reads the source labels and concludes the hotel got direct, OTA, corporate, qualified, and tour business. Amara stops her. Those labels don't all answer the same question — some describe why the guest came, others describe how they booked. Mixing the two breaks the whole revenue story.

“A segment explains the type of demand. A channel explains the booking path. Do not use one as a substitute for the other.”

Questions this chapter helps answer

  • What is the difference between a hotel market segment and a distribution channel?
  • Why should an OTA, direct website, GDS, or travel agent not automatically be treated as the guest's market segment?
  • How should segment mix and channel cost be analyzed without double-counting the same business?

What this chapter gives you

  • How to translate a single booking into separate segment and channel views without losing either
  • Why one PMS market code performing multiple jobs quietly corrupts your ADR and mix reporting
  • A method for keeping transient, group, and contract demand cleanly separated

Key concepts

  • market segment
  • distribution channel
  • source of business
  • booking channel
  • channel mix
  • segment mix
  • acquisition cost
  • net revenue
  • commercial analysis

ADR and total Rooms Revenue can remain mathematically correct while segment ADR, direct mix, OTA mix, and forecast assumptions all tell the wrong story.
